"Reflections of the Eastern Sierra"
Tuesday, August 5
St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Mammoth Lakes, 7:30 p.m.

Photo copyright Galen Powell, courtesy of Mountain Light Photography
Internationally-renowned photographer Galen Rowell spent his life traveling
the world in search of adventure and sublime natural beauty, but always
considered the Sierra Nevada his "home-field Shangri-La". Shortly before he
and his wife Barbara died in the crash of a chartered plane in August 2002,
they realized their dream of making the Eastern Sierra their home. Justin
Black, curator of the Rowells' Mountain Light Gallery in Bishop, will
present Sierra Reflections, the story of Galen's life-long affair with the
Sierra, and the ways in which the Range of Light molded his unique vision.
The musical sounds of Fiddlin' Pete Watercott and his friends Neil Gelvin
and Charlie Broten will delight your evening with high energy, traditionally
based western folk music as performed throughout the High Sierras. Fiddlin'
Pete has performed in concerts in communities all across America.

It was Pete's love of the West and the people living here that led him to
settle on the western rim of the Great Basin. Fiddlin' Pete has become a
popular entertainer throughout California and Nevada, playing at festivals,
county fairs, schools, churches, dance halls, ranch gatherings, and for the
outfitters who pack stock into and around the Sierra Nevada wilderness.

Sinfonia Concert
Thursday, August 7th
St. Josephs Catholic Church, Mammoth Lakes, 7:30 p.m.
The Sinfonia Concert will feature musicians from the Eastern Sierra Symphony
Orchestra with a spotlight on two exceptional soloists, Byron Fry and
John Reilly.
This is the west coast premiere by local composer/artist Byron Fry,
performing "Three Times Over" accompanied by the Sinfonia.
Composer/arranger/guitarist Byron Fry moved to the Eastern Sierra in the
summer of 2003, after over two decades among the denizens of the music
industry in the Los Angeles area. He studied guitar and improve under
Russ Tuttle, and attended Dick Grove's highly lauded Composing/Arranging
Program in Studio City. There, he narrowly survived exposure to
instructors Sammy Nestico (orchestration), Diz Ullman (copying), Lalo
Schiffrin (thematic development), Henry Mancini (music business), and Tom
Scott, among others. His playing, writing, and scoring credits span
numerous records, films and TV productions, as well as live performances
running the gamut from "gutter-gigs" to major tours to internationally
televised concerts in several genres. He also was a contract artist for
the state of California for three years. For all that, he is still
considered, by the select few who are aware of his existence, to be a
well-kept secret.
Another feature will be our own principal bassoonist, John Reilly, performing
the "Blues Concerto" by Bill Holcombe. John Reilly has a Master's in
Performance, Woodwind Doubling, from University of Redlands. John played
in Lake Tahoe at Harrah's Tahoe, where he backed up the many acts that came
through, Sonny and Cher, Frank Sinatra, The Carpenters, Stevie Wonder, just to
name a few.
Since his move to southern California, John has played for the soundtracks
for over 75 films and commercials. He has been nominated for five Grammy's
and has performed all over the world. John is on the faculty at California
Baptist University, in Riverside, where he teaches clarinet and bassoon.
John lives in Orange County, CA, with his wife and their two beautiful
golden retrievers.
In addition, this evening's performance will include our own woodwind octet
consisting of members of the Eastern Sierra Symphony Orchestra performing
the "Woodwind Octet in Eb" by Mozart.
